The Final Shore

Thomas Cole did not paint a second version of his famous series because he felt a sudden burst of creative inspiration. He painted it in Rome because he completely lost control of the first set and needed a do-over. The final canvas of that 1842 mulligan is Old Age. It is a grim and beautiful finale at the edge of the world.

The voyager is done fighting. His boat is battered and the trusty hourglass that haunted the previous three paintings is gone. Time has officially run out. The dark water of earthly struggle empties into a vast and terrifyingly calm ocean of eternity while the sky sits heavy with breaking clouds.

Cole debuted this oil on canvas beast at the National Academy of Design in New York. The crowd likely stared at its sprawling fifty-two by seventy-seven inches and felt their own mortality creeping up their spines. There is no more steering. The tiller is broken and the man is just a frail husk waiting for the end.

But Cole offers a quiet mercy. An angel finally descends through the parting gloom. The battered soul is guided toward a heavenly light that feels less like a reward and more like a massive sigh of relief. It is the end of the line. The struggle is over. We all end up drifting on that dark water eventually.
