Monarch Butterfly Mandala
Artist Statement
Monarch Butterfly Mandala
The Monarch Butterfly Mandala carries the physical record of personal survival and generational return. Begun prior to my own stroke and set aside during my father’s final decline with Lewy body dementia, the work was completed only after I had crossed that threshold of illness and recovery.
The layered, ghosted secondary mandala impressions visible in the outer rings hold the actual temporal weight of that interruption, functioning as strata of accumulated time rather than clean decorative motifs.
The palette moves across deep forest greens, twilight indigos, and saturated amber-oranges, echoing the monarch’s seasonal migration to Mexico in time for Día de los Muertos.
Its arrival marks the return of departed souls. Balancing natural fragility against cross-generational endurance, the composition treats the chrysalis not as an easy metaphor for change, but as a severe site of dissolution and reassembly. It stands as an intentional visual instrument for enduring the difficult middle passages of transformation.

Real transformation is rarely graceful
Real transformation is rarely graceful while you are living through it. It demands a quiet, stubborn stamina when the old ways of living have fallen away and the new path has not fully revealed itself.
If the Monarch Butterfly Mandala calls to you, you are walking through the long middle of a passage that cannot be rushed. You understand that honoring your creative spirit and building a lasting legacy often means persisting through quiet vulnerability, fatigue, and an indifferent world.
This piece carries the ancient pulse of the great migration: the knowledge that true endurance is quiet, that fragility is not weakness, and that you have the internal reserves to survive the dark seasons of the chrysalis.
Anchor that resilience in your living environment with the hero of the collection, the Framed Canvas Block.
Featuring vivid amber-oranges set against lush forest greens and midnight indigos, the archival canvas turns any room into a sanctuary of renewal and steady endurance.
Trust the time it takes to become.
