On the Work
This Mandala emerged at a time when I felt myself withdrawing from my surroundings, the rhythms of the life that had served me up until that point, but no further. I felt the orange fire of the Monarch butterflies before I comprehended that I was pulling away from my life to enter the coccoon some time back.
The transformation between Act II and Act III in life, played out over the surreal sense of mid life, when all the rainbow hues of the world bleached out into flat gray, and nothing seemed bright enough to move toward any more.
Season of Rebirth
The death of my father to dementia, the divorce of a 20 year marriage, the stroke that ended my career, all part of the chrysalis when we feel the old parts of life sliding away into new deployments that force you to stop crawling, and start to fly under your own power.
That's what this Mandala is for me. And I emerge from my own enforced dissolving of the old ways of living with this becoming the first Limited Edtion Mandala release of my art career. A beginning timed for the first tentative flaps of new wings, for the king of butterflies, whose population migrates thousands of miles each year, despite delicate, ambling paths to get there, and dangers on the way. If you feel the journey of a lifetime is upon you, meditate on this Mandala for the strength and beauty, fragility as well as tenacity, of the Monarch Butterfly as you make your Center wherever you are on your own life's path.
