This painting carries the weight of its own creation. It was begun months before my stroke, set aside when my father entered the final stage of his convalescence from Lewy Body Dementia, and only completed after I had passed through my own mortality event. The layered secondary mandala impressions visible in the outer rings are not incidental — they are the accumulated energies of that entire period, held in the structure of the work.

The Monarch Butterfly migrates to the forests of Mexico in time for Día de los Muertos, its orange wings woven into the holiday's decorations as symbols of returning souls. Death, chrysalis, transformation, reinvention in higher form — the whole arc of the symbol lives in this piece. The color field moves from the dappled greens of late-season forest through the approaching purples of twilight and midnight, tracing the threshold between what was and what comes next.
