He dragged those fragile little drawings across the ocean and back to New York. Once safe in his studio he unleashed a massive oil painting from pure memory and raw ambition. The year was 1843 and he unveiled Mount Etna from Taormina at the National Academy of Design. The public devoured it. They were hungry for a sweeping vista of European grandeur.

But Cole was not just giving them a pretty vacation picture. He was delivering a quiet threat. Look at the foreground. Those crumbling Greek ruins are not just decorative rocks scattered for aesthetic balance. They are a deliberate reminder that human empires rot away. We build great temples and sprawling cities and eventually they all turn to dust under the sun.
